Hero's welcome home for South African lawyers challenging Israel on genocide claims

Lawyer says the court case marks the beginning of a long struggle against genocide and injustice.

The South African legal team that took Israel to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), over alleged genocidal acts in Gaza, received a hero's welcome upon its return home on Sunday.

Hundreds of pro-Palestine South Africans waved Palestine's flags and posters as they waited to receive the team at OR Tambo international Airport in Johannesburg.

The team led by popular advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi was received with hugs and cheers and handed flowers.

Ngcukaitobi, who addressed the press at the airport, said he was humbled by the grand welcome and assured that they will continue to fight for the liberation of Palestine. He said the court case marked the beginning of a long struggle against genocide and injustice.

“It has been an inspirational experience because efforts that have gone into resisting an injustice on the Palestinian people remain our great source of inspiration “ said the advocate.

Ngcukaitobi further assured the country that justice and freedom will prevail, following the start of the landmark case at The Hague last week.

South Africa has gained widespread acclaim for its principled stance, demonstrating moral fortitude and courage by taking legal action against Israel at the World Court for committing genocide against the people of Gaza.

It has steadfastly supported the Palestinian people in their time of need and has become a vocal advocate for the millions of people across the world who are shocked and outraged by Israel's ongoing bombardment, which has resulted in the tragic mass slaughter of thousands of defenseless Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

South Africa accuses Israel of genocide in its retaliatory attacks on Palestine, that has claimed the lives of over 23,000 civilians and more than 10,000 children since last October. Israel has dismissed the case as baseless.
